This year marked the 50th Anniversary of Saturday Night Live, one of the greatest talk shows in history. Stars from the past 50 years and recent ones came out to perform! The Domingo Skit, the Monologue, Black Jeopardy, and so much more were reenacted and brought back for this monumental moment. Popular stars like Kim Kardashian, Sabrina Carpenter, and Steve Martin made special appearances, and those three are only a few of many celebrities. Save yourself 3 hours and read this article to get an overview of the 50th Anniversary!
The show commenced with Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon singing Simon’s hit song, “Homeward Bound.” Then the show began its famous monologue with sixteen-time host, comedian, and actor Steve Martin, and, later, the famous host Alec Baldwin joined in. He made some jokes about the show’s writers, the monologue being “the weakest part of the show,” and more, making it a memorable and comedic speech. Next was the famous “Black Jeopardy” with Eddie Murphy taking the spotlight with his impression of Tracy Morgan, who was standing right next to him. Then, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returned, leading a Q&A that was purely an excuse to show many celebrities. Ryan Reynolds, Quinta Brunson, Cher, Jason Momoa, and many, many more appeared on our screens.
One of the most beloved and best skits of the night was led by Mulaney. This was a musical about the history of New York City’s dark side that had Nathan Lane singing about cocaine and vodka to The Lion King’s “Hakuna Matata.” Lin-Manuel Miranda made an appearance as well, singing a version of Hamilton. By the end, a giant banner unraveled, showing the newspaper headline “New York to Ford: Who’s Dead Now?” SNL paused past nostalgia to deliver the humor of the show. Next up was the recently famous skit about Domingo! Sabrina Carpenter sang a very pitchy version of “Defying Gravity” and “You Belong With Me” for their friend’s (Chloe Fineman’s) vow renewal. Sabrina Carpenter, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, and Sarah Sherman were the bridesmaids or close friends singing. They are interrupted by the one and only Domingo (played by Marcello Hernández), Pedro Pascal (a.k.a. Ronaldo), and Bad Bunny (a.k.a. Santiago).
This celebration was a very important one with very impactful and monumental moments. Old stars, memorable skits, and popular memories from the past 50 years resurfaced, garnering just as many laughs and just as much applause as they have over the years. From the Domingo skit to the memorable monologue and Black Jeopardy, this show was one to remember.
