Every year at the Academy brings something new. This year, students were treated to a day of fun in the sun with the combination of two AOSE traditions: Field Day and Calendar Party.
Field Day began early in the morning, all players clapped in before heading off to their events. They were split into ten groups within the Gold and Blue teams. Races such as relay, three-legged, wheelbarrow, potato sack, and clothing (where competitors run to a pile of clothes, don an outfit, and then race back to their teammates where they take off the play-clothes, their teammate throws on the outfit and races back to the pile, the process begins again). There were also games such as tug-of-war, spikeball, and musical chairs. There were water events such as water balloon toss, sponge relay (teammates soak a sponge and race to fill a bucket of water in a designated amount of time), and cup pass (players arrange themselves in a line, grab plastic cups, and pass water behind them and over their heads in the attempt to fill a bucket with the remaining water in 3 minutes).
For the first time in recent years, seniors participated in Field Day, as the day took place before the seniors’ last day of classes. National Honor Society members planned and ran the games. In a sweeping victory, the Gold team won the majority of games, earning them a gold tag day for the following Wednesday (4/30).
Next, students prepared for the Calendar Party, an event where each grade gets a specific season and chooses a holiday from their respective time of the year. Freshmen chose Polar Plunge (winter), sophomores chose Friday Night Lights (fall), juniors chose National Water Day (spring), and seniors went with the theme of carnival (summer. The freshmen provided the “Yummiest Food,” earning them the win for that category with their cake pops, blue jello cups with gummy sharks, brownies, and fried Oreos. “Best Decorations” went to the sophomores. Juniors took home “Best Costumes” with their bathing suits over their Field Day outfits and “Best Games” with a slip-and-slide and an inflatable mini obstacle course. Their wins in these categories, coupled with their effort in preparation and execution, earned them the coveted title of “Best Overall.” Senioritis was really kicking in, as senior attempts resulted in creative face painting and soft pretzels from Philly Pretzel Factory. However, these attempts were not enough to earn them a win in any of the categories, as they were outdone by the underclassmen.
Congratulations to all of the winners of Field Day’s Gold team, as well as category winners from the Calendar Party! It seems like the combination of AOSE traditions was a success!
