Maddy Brisby, a current sophomore, has dived headfirst into the Academy community, channeling her passion into creating a new club. Last year, Maddy founded the sailing club, a unique and exciting addition to the Academy’s diverse extracurricular activities.
“I decided to start a sailing club because it’s a huge part of my life, and I wanted to share that passion with others,” Maddy explains. “I’ve always dreamed of having a sailing career throughout high school.”
Maddy’s love for sailing began before she stepped onto the Academy campus. As a child, she spent her summers in Lavalette. “I was seven when I first started sailing single-handedly in my own boat,” Maddy recalls. “Sailing is a huge part of my life. I hope to sail in college and continue to sail for the rest of my life. I have been sailing competitively throughout the spring, summer, and fall for as long as I can remember. One of my greatest accomplishments was placing 1st female and 6th overall at the Junior Olympics this past summer. The power of wind has taught me many valuable lessons, and I continue to improve my skills as I advance in my career.”
Through her efforts, Maddy has opened the doors to an incredible opportunity for her peers to experience the joy of sailing, an activity that fosters teamwork, encourages outdoor exploration, and promotes physical activity. The sailing club offers students the chance to ride the waves while building an appreciation for the water, nature, and the camaraderie that comes from learning a new skill together.
“I hope everyone gives sailing a try; you don’t have to be Moana to be a part of this club,” Maddy noted. “As long as you are willing to try something new and step out of your comfort zone you would be a perfect fit for our club!”
